Professional career
Marijke Hopman-Rock (1951) worked with TNO (Netherlands organisation for applied scientific research) in Leiden (1987-2013; voluntary till 2017) and
is professor (emeritus) of Physical activity and health of older persons at the
Amsterdam (VU) university medical center in Amsterdam (2008-2013 voluntary till
May 2024). She held a position in the management team of the Body@Work research center Physical activity, Work and
Health TNO VU medical center.
Her professional background is Biology, Psychology (statistics) and Epidemiology (PhD).
As a part-time professor in Amsterdam she guided several PhD students. She is also past (founding) chair of the European Network for Action on Ageing and Physical Activity (EUNAAPA) and an honorary member. She was associate editor of the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity (JAPA) and BMC Public Health and was also in the board of some other journals, including the Human Kinetics journal Active Aging Today. In the last one (started in 2009) she wrote columns about Reach and Adoption of PA for older persons. Active Aging Today was a journal for health professionals in the area of PA and aging.
During her TNO career she wrote more than 75 peer reviewed articles and numerous reports and chapters in
books (see Publications). In the past she was Head of the Department of PA and
Health at TNO and program manager in the same area; Vice-president of the
EGREPA (European group for Research in Elderly and PA) and co-chair of the
Aging interest group of the American College of Sport and Exercise Medicine (ACSM).
She was a member of the TOP ZonMw/NWO committee.
